A plug valve is a valve which has a conically tapered or cylindrical closure element (called as plug) to regulate the fluid flow, the cylinder or cone can be rotated inside the valve body to control fluid flow port. We can found the working principle of the plug valve is similar with ball valve, actually the ball valve is evolved from the plug valve with a ball as its closing parts.

Plug valve is Quarter-turn rotary motion Valve. In open position, this bored passage is in line with the flow direction, when the plug is turned 90° from the open position, the solid part of the plug blocks the flow. The plugs in plug valves have one or more hollow passageways going sideways through the plug, so that fluid can flow through the plug when the valve is open. Plug valves are simple and often economical.

There are several types of plug valve in general design: Lubricating Plug Valve, Non-Lubricating Plug Valve, Multi-Port Plug Valves, Eccentric Plug Valve, Expanding Plug Valve.

And based on the plug pattern, the plug Valve is classified into types as follows:

Round opening- Full-bore round ports in both plug and body.

Rectangular opening with rectangular shaped ports of full-bore section.

Standard opening where the area through the valve is less than the area of the standard pipe.

Diamond port where the opening through the valve is diamond shaped.

Multiport with three or more pipe connections.

Venturi design with reduced area porting and featuring venturi flow through the body.

Short plug valves with reduced area ports and reduced face to face dimensions.

Vertical plug valves with reduced area seating ports and the plug passages reduced in section to form a throat.
